The FTb features Quick Loading (QL) which allows one to load film simply by laying it across the film gate and closing the back — no threading required. The Canon FTb has a big, beautiful 0.85x magnification finder, which is bigger than anything today from Canon. (Canon's 2012 flagship, the $6,800 1D X, has only a 0.76x magnification finder.)

The Canon TLb, the Canon TX, and the Bell & Howell FD35 are all based on the FTb but have a slower top shutter speed of 1/500 th of a second. My Canon TLb weighs 695 grams; my FD35 weighs 706. These aren't radically lighter than the FTb, but an ounce or two might make a difference over the course of a long day.

Specifications Like the flagship Canon F-1, the FTb was compatible with FD lenses. It was a mass-market camera having the same basic features as the F-1. Like the F-1, it had maximum-aperture TTL metering, match-needle exposure adjustment, and high-precision 12% partial metering at the center.

Canon FTb Review - Summary. This Canon FTb was a wonderful purchase for $15. On my first roll of ASA 400 speed film, using a slightly incorrect battery for the metering system, using my Gossen Digisix light meter, 12 of my 24 exposures were wonderful. What a great piece of engineering from approximately 1970.

But, it is the forgotten wonder from the days when stuff was built to last.

Classic Camera Review: Canon FTb QL June 21, 2023 (August 6, 2023) BSmith One of these passed through my hands a few years ago, and I regretted selling it. I did not have any intention of building a Canon system at the time, and I let it go in favor of something else. Over the last few months, another one came along, as did a few nice lenses.
